An 18-year-old man charged with killing 86-year-old Fusako Petrus on the Highlands High School campus last week and with attacking two other women appeared in court today. He is charged with six felonies.

Sacramento Superior Court Judge Robert Sueyoshi read the charges.

"It is further alleged as a special circumstance that the murder of Fusako Petrus was committed by the defendant Neven Glen Butler while said defendant was in commission of the crime of attempted rape."

Linda Parisi is Butler's defense attorney. She says it's early in the court process.

"I don't have all of those records, but I do think his mental status is an issue that will be considered in the case," says Parisi.

Butler appeared in court wearing a green jumpsuit. The Sheriff's department says defendants are issued the green suits if inmates are at risk for assault from other inmates.

Friends of Fusako Petrus were in the audience. They say a memorial service for her is planned for early next month.

Butler's family was in court as well, but declined to comment.
