California Homicide Suspect Arrested After 19-Hour Standoff

Friday, April 28, 2017 | Sacramento, CA

(AP) - A man suspected of fatally shooting his girlfriend surrendered to police after a 19-hour standoff while he hunkered down in his Mercedes Benz sedan.

Walnut Creek Police say 38-year-old Greg Prokopowicz exited the car with his hands up Friday afternoon after officers fired tear gas into the vehicle. He is accused of killing a 47-year-old woman Thursday afternoon outside a wildlife museum about 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of San Francisco. Her name has not been released.

Police Chief Thomas Chaplin said officers spotted Prokopowicz riding as a passenger in the car Thursday evening and pulled it over. The driver left but Prokopowicz refused to get out and at times held a gun to his head. Police surrounded the car, negotiating with him through the night until his arrest.
