Some federal immigration and employment policies are scheduled to change in January.
The new rules from the Department of Homeland Security are designed to make it easier for employers to hire and keep workers from other countries.
Sharon Rummery is with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
"The new rules provide for you to be able to change jobs even if your employer withdrew the petition and even if the employer's business went out of business, you can remain in the country and get another visa to work so that you are still in good status," says Rummery.
Some of the rule changes include automatic extensions for people as long they submit their paperwork on time.
The new rules go into effect Jan. 17.
