UCLA football coach Jim Mora had the highest salary reported to the Controller at $3.5 million last year. Just after him, the school’s basketball coach Steve Alford received $2.7 million.
For comparison, USA Today ranked Mora’s pay 25th among all NCAA football coaches, while Alford would have ranked 14th among coaches in the March Madness tournament, if UCLA had won a spot this year.
The bulk of California’s top publicly-paid earners are doctors in the UC system who receive grants or profits from clinical research.
At state agencies, top officials managing retirement and insurance funds have the highest salaries, earning in the mid-to-upper six-figures.
The average salary for city, county and state employees is about $64,000, while UC employees earn $47,000 on average.
