Univ. Of California Joins Bill Gates' Clean Energy Coalition

Monday, November 30, 2015 | SAN FRANCISCO

(AP) - The University of California says it is joining a coalition led by Microsoft founder Bill Gates that will invest in the research and development of clean energy technology to fight climate change.

UC is the sole institutional investor to join 27 private sector members of Gates' Breakthrough Energy Coalition, which will be unveiled in Paris on Monday.

Members of the coalition come from 10 countries, including the United States, India and China.

The university says in a statement that it will help the coalition explore how it can best participate in early-stage investments.

UC says it will also invest alongside other members of the coalition. The university had earlier pledged $1 billion in investments in clean energy innovation over the next five years. It has also promised an additional $250 million to fund early-stage ideas emerging from the UC ecosystem.
