Five grass fires are burning on the north side of the American River. Sac City Fire says a single fire quickly grew to multiple fires and two alarms because of blowing embers.

Original story: 5:06 p.m. - The fire is burning away from the river toward Costco, the Woodlake neighborhood and Highway 160.

Chris Harvey with Sac City Fire says a single fire quickly grew to multiple fires and two alarms because of blowing embers.

"I would encourage people who are downwind of this fire to be vigilant and make sure they are watching their yards or their roofs because with this wind that's happening right now, we definitely have a lot of airborne burning and burnt particles floating through the air."

A Sac Metro Fire helicopter is assisting with water drops.

No structures are immediately threatended.

The fire started at about 4:30 p.m.  No cause has been identified.
