The developers of the McKinley Village project in East Sacramento have reached an agreement with Union Pacific and the City of Sacramento to build a new railroad bridge and vehicle underpass.
Developer Phil Angelides says the new underpass will extend 40th Street from C Street into McKinley Villageand will cost about $12 million.
"You build what's called a 'shoofly' and that is: the embankment will be widened and then the trains will run on new tracks put down. Meanwhile, the old embankment is cut and the bridge is built. And when that's all complete, the trains return to the original alignment."
The western side of the project would be accessible from Midtown by 28th Street.
Opponents of the project have complained about the lack of access to the 336-home development. They've asked for a third access route to reduce traffic congestion.
If the city is unable to identify a third way, the developers will donate $2 million to pay for other bicycle, pedestrian, or transit projects.
Work on the bridge is scheduled to begin within a couple of weeks.
