UPDATE 6:15 p.m.

Republican Doug Ose's lead has narrowed in his effort to unseat 7th District Democratic Congressman Ami Bera.

The latest count shows Bera now trails challenger Ose by 530 votes.

Sacramento County Registrar of Voters Jill LaVine says employees can sort, verify signatures, and count votes for about 31,000 ballots every two days.

Original story - Ballot Counting Resumes In Sacramento

Sacramento County elections employees will return to the job of processing and counting ballots this morning. There are about 80,000 uncounted ballots from the Nov. 4 general election.

County Registrar of Voters Jill LaVine says there are more than 1,263 districts in the county and there is no way to tell how many ballots came from each.

"So if I pick up 100 ballots from the downtown area, chances are that only maybe 10 of them are from the downtown area. The others are dropped off from people at work. So, they're just all over the place."

She says each district has at least 300 - but no more than 1,000 - residents.

LaVine says employees can sort, verify signatures, and count votes for about 31,000 ballots every two days.

"They have to be prepared and that's a whole 'nother team, and they have to be sig(nature) checked and that's another team and they have to be sorted down and that's another team. So they're all in a process and it kind of goes, you know, put these ballots in and they pop out of the back end and are counted."

Each county has 28 days from the day of the election to certify results.
