Truckee Wants More Free Electric Car Charging Stations

Electric car maker Tesla is finishing construction of a new charging station in Truckee. But it's not for public use. The town would like more stations the where the public could plug in.

The town of Truckee has one free charging station. Steve Poncelet of the Truckee-Donner Public Utility District wants two more.

“We have a lot of second homes in our community and our customers come from Sacramento and the Bay Area and they have got tons of electric vehicles down there. They are driving them around and they want to take their cars up here.”

The problem is the town hasn’t been able to secure financing from the state.

Meanwhile, behind a supermarket in Truckee, Tesla is installing a six-bay private electric car charging station.

“The private market gets it, they are investing big dollars.”

Poncelet says it would cost a million dollars for the utility district to install a similar system. Tesla representatives declined to comment on the cost of the private charging facility.
