(AP) -- Police in Northern California have shot and killed a man who brandished a knife after he stabbed an infant to death and injured the child's mother.

Folsom police Officer Andrew Bates said the confrontation occurred outside an apartment building Thursday afternoon.

The Sacramento Bee reports an officer responding to calls about a stabbing was confronted by a man in his 20s who was armed with a large knife. The officer shot the man, who died after being taken to the hospital.

The man's aunt, who suffered stabbing wounds, was hospitalized in critical condition. Her 6-month-old boy died in the hospital.

The circumstances that led to the attack were under investigation.

Local media outlets reported that the baby was 6-month-old Roberto Varela and the mother is Arela Aguilar.
