California Man Arrested In Plot To Fight In Syria

Monday, March 17, 2014 | Sacramento, CA

Nicholas Teausant of Acampo, Calif., was taken off a northbound Amtrak bus overnight just short of the border.

A criminal complaint filed Monday in federal court in Sacramento described him as a student at San Joaquin Delta Community College in Stockton and a member of the National Guard who is being discharged for failing to meet basic academic requirements.

The complaint also said he had discussed numerous ideas for terrorist activity that never came to fruition, including a plot supposedly hatched during a camping trip to bomb the Los Angeles subway system last New Year's Eve or New Year's Day.

Monday, March 17

Federal prosecutors say a 20-year-old California man has been arrested near the Canadian border in Washington state and charged with trying to provide support to Islamic extremists fighting in Syria.

The Justice Department said Monday that Nicholas Teausant, of Acampo, Calif., was planning to travel to Canada before proceeding to Syria to join the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which has been designated as a foreign terrorist organization.

Investigators said he was taken off a Canada-bound Amtrak bus overnight and is due to appear in federal court in Seattle on Monday afternoon.

Teausant was charged in a criminal complaint filed in Sacramento with a single count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. It wasn't immediately clear if he had a lawyer.
