Cannons shot silver confetti into the air to mark the groundbreaking for more than four miles of track from Meadowview Road to Cosumnes River College.
“I think it really connects south Sacramento, Elk Grove,Galt, all of south county to the rest of the region,” says Sacramento County Supervisor Don Nottoli. He says the Blue Line extension will help decrease traffic congestion while increasing opportunities for people in the area, "You’re connecting neighborhoods and folks from the community with all types of opportunities, jobs, educational opportunities because of where the light rail goes, certainly to the colleges and other educational institutions.”
Other projects in the area include an extension of Cosumnes River Boulevard and two new bridges.
The extension will include four new stations and a transit hub at a cost of $270 million. The project should be complete by 2015.
