Campus Police Chief Matt Carmichael says the incident is also being investigated as a hate crime.
“We found a racial slur that had been written on a chalkboard inside one of the facilities that had been vandalized.”
Carmichael says in Davis, apparent hate crimes like this affect the community far greater than broken windows.
“We’re a very diverse community, we’re a very open campus and things like this are hurtful.”
In a statement, UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi said she was "incensed and heartbroken."
UC Davis experienced a wave of such incidents three years ago, when swastikas were found around campus, and a campus center for lesbian and gay students was vandalized.
