Record-High California Voter Turnout...Sort Of

  •  Ben Adler
Friday, December 16, 2016 | Sacramento, CA

More California voters cast ballots in last month's election than ever before, but not a record-high percent.

That's according to the Secretary of State's office, which certified the election results Friday afternoon.

The record 14,610,509 voters is nearly a million more than the previous high in November 2008.

However, the 75 percent turnout of registered voters and 59 percent turnout of eligible voters both fell short of the 2008 general election.

The Secretary of State's office also says nearly 58 percent of California voters this election cast their ballots by mail. That's higher than any other presidential general election.

And it's likely to go up even further in the coming years. In addition to a gradual trend of Californians increasingly voting by mail, a new state law allows counties to switch to a new system in which every voter receives a ballot in the mail.
