Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson has presided over his last city council meeting Tuesday night. Thirty minutes before that meeting, a half-hour party was held at City Hall, where Johnson thanked city workers for their efforts.
"It has been my sincere honor and privilege to serve as your mayor and it is my hope that at the end of my final week, that the people look back at my tenure and believe that I’ve left Sacramento just a little bit better," says Johnson.
State Senator Richard Pan said Johnson changed Sacramento’s image to outsiders and to the people who live here.
"This idea of being a world-class city and that we are going to be that and Mayor Johnson made us all say, 'You know what? We should be,'" says Pan. "That’s what we should be and that is Sacramento and that’s what we are and I think we all now feel that way because of Mayor Johnson."
Pan and Assemblyman Jim Cooper presented the mayor with proclamations, as did the Sacramento City Council.
During the meeting, Councilman Rick Jennings said the Sacramento Kings were planning to retire a Johnson jersey at the Golden 1 Center. Johnson has never played for the team during his NBA career.
The Kings, however, said in a statement there were no such plans.
“We are thankful and appreciative of the Mayor’s tireless dedication and commitment to Sacramento and the Kings. In addition to the wall honoring the Mayor and city council for their efforts to save our team, we do not have any immediate plans to retire his jersey however our organization continues to look for ways to honor the Mayor and all of those who were integral to the building of Golden 1 Center.”
The council also proclaimed December Kevin Johnson month. Johnson did not say what his future plans hold.
