The trauma center serving San Joaquin County reopened over the weekend after being closed for over a month because of inadequate staffing.
The reopening will keep many victims with serious injuries from taking long trips to other hospitals.
Over 100 patients with critical injuries from car accidents to shootings suffered in San Joaquin County had to seek treatment at hospitals in Modesto and Sacramento during September.
When the trauma center at San Joaquin General Hospital opened 3 years ago, it was only seeing about 110 patients a month, but that has doubled to almost 200.
San Joaquin County Emergency Medical Services Agency Administrator Dan Burch says the hiring of more nurses and surgeons allows for a partial reopening.
“Will bring the majority of trauma patients to San Joaquin General Hospital and that will result in approximately 65-80 percent of trauma patients in San Joaquin County being transported to San Joaquin General Hospital,” says Burch.
Burch also says more personnel will be added in the coming months which will allow full service to the trauma center by January.
