California Governor Jerry Brown and a bipartisan group of 16 other governors have agreed to work together to expand clean energy options. It will allow the states to take steps toward a goal they wouldn’t be able to realize separately.
Governor Brown says the agreement will allow states to work together to modernize a regional grid so that it can handle intermittent demands of renewable energy like solar and wind.
States will also be able to leverage their buying power by jointly purchasing electric cars. Brown says the bipartisan partnership will give states a better ability to provide clean energy.
“We think we can make major strides forward, and bypass all the bickering in Washington where you see this very toxic partisanship," says Brown. "We’re going to leave that behind and work on what we can work on and that’s the renewable energy accord. So I think it's very important. Does it do everything, no, but nothing ever does in politics.”
States signing on to the Governors' Accord for a New Energy Future represent 40-percent of the nation’s population.
