AAA projects more than 3.7 million Californians will drive to reach their holiday destinations – down 6% from last year when the 4th of July fell on a Wednesday.
Cynthia Harris is with the AAA auto club.
“This was foreseen. This year it’s back to more of the ‘well, we only have a four-day weekend so we’re going to stay closer to home.”
The AAA survey finds overall travel, including by air and rail, is relatively flat from last year. About 4.7 million Californians plan to travel at least 50 miles or more.
“Californians are definitely optimistic about the economy even though there (are) ongoing concerns, but we are starting this slow recovery period and you can sense it with consumers during major holidays.”
Harris says airfares are expected to go up by 6% over the Independence Day holiday with the lowest round-trip rate averaging $228 per ticket. Weekend car rentals prices are expected to go up by about 30%.
