According to the latest round of tests from the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District, 14 new mosquito samples and four new birds have tested positive for the virus. That brings the total across the two counties so far this year to nearly 10 birds and 25 mosquito samples – as well as one human case in Sacramento County. Last week, mosquito abatement districts in Placer and San Joaquin counties also announced birds had tested positive.
And this week’s rain could make matters worse: It’ll create more pools of stagnant water for mosquitoes to breed in. When temperatures heat up later this week, the chance of the mosquito-borne disease spreading to people will go up too.
The abatement districts recommend that property owners drain any standing water that could produce mosquitoes and make sure window and door screens are in good condition.
