Sacramento, Calif. – August 17 2015: Veteran capitol reporter Chris Nichols has joined Capital Public Radio’s newsroom as our PolitiFact California Reporter. This is a first-of-its kind partnership between a public radio station and the Pulitzer Prize winning PolitiFact.

“PolitiFact California is an exciting evolution in our coverage of state government. We want to bring a new level of journalistic oversight to what elected officials are doing and saying in Sacramento,” says CapRadio Chief Content Officer Joe Barr. “We’re thrilled to have a first-rate reporter like Chris Nichols join our team to launch this initiative.”

“Decisions made in California can ripple across the United States. I am eager to check the facts, or lack thereof, behind statements made by our state’s political leaders. I am also excited to share my reports on Capital Public Radio for listeners across the state,” says Nichols.

Beginning this fall, PolitiFact California reports will be distributed to more than 30 radio stations in California, Nevada and Oregon reaching 3.2 million listeners each week through the Capital Public Radio Network. In Sacramento, his reports will be aired on our News Stations and can be found at capradio.org/politifact. Chris can be reached directly at chris.nichols@csus.edu.

PolitiFact California’s journalism also will be featured and promoted on PolitiFact.com, joining seven other PolitiFact state-based fact-checking websites. Those state sites include partnerships with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Austin American-Statesman, the Concord Monitor, the Miami Herald, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Richmond Times-Dispatch and the Providence Journal.

About PolitiFact

PolitiFact was launched in 2007 to fact-check the presidential campaign. In 2009, the website

created the Obameter to track President Obama’s 500-plus campaign promises. In 2013, it launched PunditFact, to fact-check pundits and talk show hosts. It is now the nation’s largest political fact-checking effort. The website has received numerous awards, including the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting. The site is a product of the Tampa Bay Times, Florida’s largest newspaper, with an average circulation of 350,216 Sunday and 281,267 daily (AAM FAS-FAX September 2014).

Capital Public Radio is the NPR affiliate serving California’s Central Valley and Sierra Nevada. Seven frequencies, 420,000 listeners, and one mission: to build stronger communities by listening deeper.   NEWS   90.9 FM Sacramento ∙ 90.5 FM Tahoe/Reno ∙ 91.3 FM Stockton/Modesto ∙ 88.1 FM Quincy
