College President Deborah Travis says the garage was actually built in part to encourage students and neighbors of the college to drive less.
"Individuals who are in the South Sacramento community can come here and park and be able to access light rail from this station and go up to our Sacramento City College. They can also attend other types of cultural events and those types of things. So, not only for students but for residents as well," she said.
Sacramento Regional Transit already has a bus stop in front of the building. The blue line light rail extension to the college is scheduled to be completed by 2015.
The garage has 2,000 spaces.
