The Sacramento City Council is taking the first steps toward resuming development in the Natomas area. The news comes more than six years after imposition of a federal moratorium because of concern over the safety of levees.
Acting as Mayor Pro Tem, Councilwoman Angelique Ashby says a letter lifting the moratorium is expected this month from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Anticipating the letter, Ashby says she and other members of the council who represent parts of Natomas will present a plan to the council next week for resuming residential construction.
"We're ready to present to the Law and Leg Committee, and then to the council, the notion of a measured approach on development that allows for a thousand residents in the first year, not to exceed and 500 multifamily units in the first year; not to exceed 2,000 by the second year and not to exceed 3,000 by the third," Ashby says.
Ashby also says the letter from FEMA will also clear the way for a dozen Natomas homeowners to get permits to make repairs to their homes. Each has sustained more than $50,000 in damage, but could not be repaired because of the moratorium.
