New Performing Arts Center For Sacramento?

The Eccles Theater project in Salt Lake City includes 2500 seats and a 24-story office building. The theater is expected to open spring 2016.

The City of Sacramento is moving ahead with plans to determine the feasibility of a new, downtown, performing-arts theater.

As early as next week, the City will interview four consultants who are competing to perform a feasibility study.

Jody Ullich is the Director of Convention and Cultural Services for the city.

"There's been a lot of technology that now exists in performing arts centers that we are not offering to our patrons. And we also have some great organizations out there -the ballet, symphony, opera- that really would benefit from having a first-class facility to perform at."

Ullich says the study will identify possible locations, sizes, and costs of  a new theater. She says it would complement the new arena.

A consultant could be selected within a month.

The City Council created a task force to look into the matter about six months ago. The task force will give its first report to the City Council tonight.
