Wildfires Burn Structures, Menace Homes In Northern California

UPDATE 2 P.M. Evacuation orders for Little Valley have been lifted for residents.

Authorities released the following statement for the Bald Fire, which has burned 39,850 acres and is 30 percent contained.

As of 2:00pm today, the evacuation order for Little Valley will be lifted and residents will be allowed to return home. The Little Valley Road will only be open to residents due to continued high level of fire fighting activity and equipment along the road.

Firefighters stopped the Bald Fire from burning into Little Valley, so returning residents will not have any direct effects from the fire. However, people are advised to avoid the fire area and to not interfere in any way with fire suppression activities. Anyone driving on Little Valley Road must drive slowly and use extreme caution due to the presence of firefighting crews and equipment along the road.

The northern portion of the Lassen National Forest remains closed to public entry due to the wildfires. Even after the fires are contained, hazards such as standing dead trees (snags), ash pits, hazmat, and damage to roads and bridges must be evaluated and mitigated before it will be safe to reopen this area. The Lassen National Forest is closed north of Road 16 (33N16), Highway 44 and Road 33N02.

Meanwhile, the Eiler Fire remains at 28,600 acres and is 20 percent contained.

Officials released the following road closure changes related to that fire:

7 A.M. Two Northern California wildfires are menacing the small town of Burney as they burn through drought-stricken brush.

The Eiler Fire has destroyed eight homes and is threatening about 700 others. It was only 10 percent contained as of Monday night. The flames are within four miles, and with ash falling in the Shasta County town, Burney residents have been told to be ready to get out.

There's a chance of thunderstorms in Wednesday's forecast, and officials warn that lightning could spark new blazes.

The Eiler Fire is one of about a dozen wildfires that have burned more than 200 square miles across California.

The second blaze called the Bald Fire has burned 39,850 acres and is 20 percent contained.

Meanwhile, a major wildfire in the mountains along the Oregon-California border has slowed but still threatens 270 homes. Nine large fires are burning across 118 square miles of forest and rangeland in Oregon.

In Washington state, a wind-whipped fire has destroyed about a dozen structures and prompted an evacuation notice for about 80 homes in Kittitas County.
