El Portal Fire Threatening Parts of Yosemite National Park

Update: 10:20 p.m.:

The El Portal Fire has held at 2,100 acres burned as of late Sunday, while evacuations for Foresta and Old El Portal remain in effect. Authorities say it is possible the evacuations will be lifted by Wednesday, according to the Yosemite El Portal Fire update report.

Fire officials say 90 residences and 50 outbuildings are threatened by the fire.

A community meeting about the El Portal Fire is scheduled for 6 p.m Monday at the El Portal School.

  • Road Closures Due to El Portal FireThe Big Oak Flat Road between Crane Flat and the El Portal Road is temporarily closed. There is no access to Yosemite Valley via the Big Oak Flat Road or Highway 120. Tioga Road is open and accessible via Big Oak Flat and Tioga Pass Entrances.
  • Campground Closures Due to FireCrane Flat, Bridalveil Creek, and Yosemite Creek Campgrounds are temporarily closed.
  • Yosemite National Park is OpenYosemite Valley, Glacier Point, and Wawona/Mariposa Grove areas are open and accessible via Highways 140 and 41. Tioga Road is not accessible via Highways 140 and 41 due to a fire.

  • Aircraft – fixed winged tankers and helicopters were utilized during daylight hours

The El Portal Fire is holding at 2,100 acres, with 5 percent containment. Yosemite National Park, and all entrances and roads within the park, remain open, although some roads near the park are closed due to the fire. 

The Mariposa County Sherriffs office is reporting evacuations ordered for the areas known as "Old" El Portal and "Foresta."

Road closures include:

  • Foresta Road at Highway 140
  • Crane Creek Road at Highway 140
  • Highway 120 (Big Oak Flat Road) between Crane Flat and Highway 140

The American Red Cross has established a shelters at the Groveland Community Center, 18583 Main Street in Groveland, for residents in the area known as Foresta and at the Tenya Lodge, 1122 Highway 41 in Fish Camp for residents in the "Old" El Portal area.

Original Post: 10:00 a.m.:

The El Portal Fire started late Saturday afternoon near Highway 140 and the community of El Portal just outside of the Yosemite Arch Rock entrance.

By Sunday morning it had grown to 2,100 acres threatening the communities of El Portal and Foresta. The fire is 5 percent contained.

Evacuations, area and road closures are in effect. Some structures have been lost in Foresta, and the damage assessment is ongoing.

The Merced Grove of Giant Sequoias in Yosemite National Park is threatened by the fire.

Big Oak Flat Rd between Crane Flat & the El Portal Rd is temporarily closed. There is no access to Yosemite Valley via the Big Oak Flat Rd or Hwy 120. Tioga Rd is open & accessible via Big Oak Flat & Tioga Pass Entrances. Crane Flat Campground is closed.

Yosemite National Park Remains Open as of 10 a.m. Sunday

Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point, and Wawona/Mariposa Grove areas are open and accessible via Highways 140 and 41. Tioga Road is not accessible via Highways 140 and 41 due to the fire.
