Though Wagner died nearly a year before Brahms premiered his Symphony #3 in late 1883, soldiers in this battle were still fighting. Proponents of Wagnerian ideology actually showed up at the concert hall and tried to interfere with the Brahms premiere. Enthusiasts on both "sides" nearly came to blows.
