It was the first day the state began offering drive authorization cards for immigrants in the country illegally. Nevada expects 60,000 applications this year.
Michele Cabrerra is a U.S. citizen but her husband isn’t, so he was applying for the card. She says for the past 10 years, she’s run all of the family’s driving errands.
"One hundred percent excited and I am very thankful that we now have an opportunity, he will be able to drive and have his own car and I will be able to have my own car without having to worry about taking everyone everywhere," she says. "It is definitely a burden when it is only me driving.”
The new driver authorization card cannot be used for identification. A similar card will be available in California in 2015.
