A Closer Look At California Face Mask Order And Gov. Newsom's Authority

It’s been one week since Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered all Californians to wear face-coverings in public or high-risk settings. 

But there’s been debate over whether the Governor has the legal authority to impose such an order. Counties across the state are still deciding whether to join the local jurisdictions that do mandate face masks. 

The debate comes amid a nationwide spike in confirmed cases of COVID-19, as California set record highs in cases multiple times throughout this week alone. 

We take a closer look today at Gov. Newsom’s authority to mandate wearing face-coverings with the PolitiFact California team.
