Highway 395 runs from Southern California's Inland Empire along the eastern edge of the Sierra. Along the way it passes some uniquely California sites. There are dusty gold rush ghost towns, the moonscape of the tufa's at Mono Lake, the highest spot in the lower 48 states — Mt. Whitney — and the lowest — Death Valley.

While the route is away from the coasts and away from the big cities, it's no less loved by the people who make the trip. Still, the road holds secrets even the most devoted traveler rarely thinks about.

This summer CapRadio's new podcast "395" takes you on a road trip along a stretch of road that reveals a different kind of California. It may not always be the postcard version of the state, but the stops along the road represent who we are as Californians.

Join us as we travel 395, from its start as a livestock trail to its role in WWII, and learn more about a legacy that includes fights over water, the bitter history of internment and the backdrop of Hollywood.
