The installation encompasses 96 flags and is being mounted to celebrate Pride Month. It also commemorates the 50th anniversary of The Stonewall Riots. Those riots were a series of violent confrontations between police and gay rights activists in the early hours of June 28th, 1969. That uprising took place outside of the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village. Stonewall is considered by many to be the beginning of the modern gay rights movement.

The installation Colors of Progress is up for the month of June and can be viewed in two locations: June 3rd and 4th on Capitol Mall between 9th and 10th Streets, and outside Governor Gavin Newsom's office at the State Capitol Building, June 3rd through June 30th.

Tre Borden, the project’s producer, and the installation’s artist, Phil America join Insight to talk about what inspired Colors of Progress and how it reflects and represents gay activism.
