Bikes And Trailers Will Join Food Trucks As Legal Vendors In The City Of Sacramento

Food trucks are allowed in the city of Sacramento and will soon be joined by food trailers and food bicycles.

The Sacramento City Council voted Sept. 13 to allow more vehicles to serve food, as is allowed in Sacramento County.

Curtis Hagen is starting his own coffee-vending business. He said he can't afford the kind of food truck currently required by the city.

"It's a whopper of a unit. It can hold virtually everything you need for a full professional kitchen,"Hagen said. "However, my dream is simply vending coffee. I don't need such a space."

He is in the market for a trailer.

Tessa St. John is the Business Permits Program Manager for the city. She said dozens of people have asked for the rules to be changed.

"A lot of food trailers operate at places like breweries perhaps or on private property where they don't have food," St. John said. "So trailers can be a little bit more comfortable there than a truck."

St. John says 30-50 food trailers could be on the streets as soon as the middle of October. She said four people have inquired about serving food from two wheels.

"We've also had some really innovative business people who have come forward with some food bicycles," St. John said. "There's someone who has a food bicycle that serves coffee and then one that sells stroopwafels from the Netherlands."

Stroopwafels are thin waffles with syrup in the middle.
