Sacramento City Councilman Rescinds Endorsement Of District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert

Sacramento City Councilman Allen Warren has pulled his endorsement of District Attorney Anne-Marie Schubert in her re-election campaign.

In a letter, Warren wrote that his endorsement of Schubert “was given based on the benefit of the doubt that the office would apply the criminal justice system equally and fairly across all sectors of our society,” but that, “given the current state of affairs ... I find it inappropriate for me to give this important political office the benefit of the doubt and I need certainty as it relates to the application of justice."

The Sacramento Black Lives Matter chapter has urged officials to rescind their endorsements of Schubert. The group also has demonstrated against police shootings of black Sacramentans in recent years, including Stephon Clark, who was killed in March.

Protesters also have criticized council members for endorsing Schubert after she failed to prosecute two Sacramento Police officers who shot and killed Joseph Mann in 2016. The officers in the Mann shooting were not charged with a crime, though neither is still with the department.

As of Friday afternoon, Schubert’s campaign had not responded to requests for comment.

She is being challenged by Noah Phillips, a prosecutor in the DA’s office, in this June’s primary.
