The Sacramento Kings have a formal plan to host the 2022 or 2023 NBA All-Star Game. The Sacramento City Council is expected to give its blessing to the proposal on Tuesday.
The Kings came to Sacramento in 1985 and have yet to host an All-Star Game. An inadequate arena and lack of hotel rooms have often been cited as reasons the team hasn't been chosen.
The NBA usually requires a city have around 5,000 hotel rooms near the game site.
When the team was opening the Golden 1 Center, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said that in his opinion all new arenas should have the opportunity to host the All-Star Game. But, he mentioned Sacramento was well short of the hotel capacity requirement.
One idea that's been floated is to put cruise ships at the Port of Sacramento in West Sac to help increase the number of rooms available.
Last year, one study estimated the All-Star Game, which includes a week of festivities like the dunk contest, three-point shootout and a celebrity game, brought in $44.9 million to the state of Louisiana and $23.7 million to New Orleans.
This year's All-Star Game is Sunday in Los Angeles.
