"Lady Bird" writer and director Greta Gerwig gave Sacramento a shoutout during Sunday's Golden Globes.

Gerwig's directorial debut won the Golden Globe Award for best film comedy or musical. The coming-of-age movie about a girl in high school in Sacramento was inspired by Gerwig's own upbringing.

"I want to say thank you to my mom and dad and the people of Sacramento who gave me roots and wings and helped me to get where I am today and just thank you, thank you, thank you," Gerwig said in her acceptance speech.

Saoirse Ronan, who played the title character, took home a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical. Speaking on Capital Public Radio's Insight in November, Ronan said hoped "Lady Bird" would inpsire more female filmmakers.

"I hope a film like this will make other female writers and female storytellers feel like they do have a voice and hopefully they will be supported in telling that story," Ronan said.

The film also received nominations for Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
