Stockton is mounting a major recruiting drive for its police department. The goal is to hire 50 new officers by the end of June.
A sales tax hike made it possible to add 90 officers over the last 4 years. And now the men and women in blue number 435 for the Stockton Police Department, but the goal is 485.
Stockton Police Officer Joe Silva says recruiters are going statewide looking for candidates but the emphasis is especially at home.
“Our chief really wants homegrown Stockton police officers, people who have a stake in the community, people who know this community, people want to make a difference for the City of Stockton,” says Silva.
He also says Stockton is taking the unusual step of paying trainees while they attend the academy, and after they graduate, the starting annual pay for a recruit is $67,000.
