Democratic Assemblyman Luis Alejo authored the bill. He put a positive spin on the measure’s inability to make it through the legislature this session.
“It’s moving in the right direction. It has the most support it’s ever had and has its best shot of actually being signed,” Alejo said. “I’m just exercising my due diligence by taking a few more months so that we can get it in the best shape possible as build some more consensus and, in the early part of next year, hopefully get that signature from Governor Jerry Brown.”
Alejo said lawmakers have been trying to pass a version of the bill for ten years. He said currently, undocumented immigrants are often arrested for driving without a license, which could lead to their deportation.
