Lake Tahoe's current clarity and its future environmental challenges will be discussed later this morning as political leaders gather on its shores for the 21st Annual Tahoe Clarity Summit.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein will be hosting the event with speeches from Sen. Kamala Harris, Sen. Dean Heller, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval and many others. It comes as the Trump administration is finalizing next years budget will allocate key funds for environmental protection.

Feinstein says the focus of the event will be combating the effects of climate change.

The EPA will announce at this morning's event a $200,000 award to help the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency with projects focused on wetland restoration.

EPA Acting Regional Administrator Alexis Strauss says it takes the support of many sources to help maintain the lake's famous clarity.

"I think that TRPA could always use more money, but we gave them what we could and I don't know exactly what the request may have been, but I am hopeful that we will continue to be in a position of supporting their great work," Strauss says.

The summit comes just weeks after a report out of UC Davis warned of the lake's rapidly warming waters.

Capital Public Radio’s Randol White joins Insight with a preview.
