George Benson: Inspiration: A Tribute to Nat Cole

George Benson

  •  In 1951 Lil’ George Benson (age 8) won a singing contest in his native Pittsburgh, performing “Mona Lisa” in the tradition of Nat King Cole. His prize was an opportunity to record the song.
  • Cole always had a strong influence on Benson and their careers have shared a similar arc. Both musicians established themselves as top-drawer improvisers (Cole on piano, Benson on guitar) before enjoying massive crossover success as vocalists.
  • On Inspiration, Benson covers twelve of Cole’s most infectious songs. A fresh new arrangement of “Unforgettable” features a brilliant cameo by trumpet master Wynton Marsalis. “Just One of Those Things” and “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself A Letter” feature classic Nelson Riddle arrangements and the 42-piece Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra.

Jazz Music Director Gary Vercelli wrote, “George Benson has had an enduring career as a jazz and pop icon. This new chapter in his career is both a heartfelt tribute and a testament to his value for tradition.”

  • This is arguably the most widely-admired jazz trio in the world today, transforming great standards such as “Meaning of the Blues,” “All the Things You Are,” “Moon and Sand,” and “Never Let Me Go.”
  • Includes historical session photos and updated liner notes.

Jazz Music Director Gary Vercelli said, “When I saw this trio perform at the Verona Jazz Festival in an outdoor amphitheatre built during Roman times with the Adige River running in the background, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven!”

Donate Books to a Local Library

Library Books

Capital Public Radio is committed to supporting our community in several ways, and not just with the radio service we provide. Did you know that one in four adults in California is a high school drop out? That’s why we’ve decided to offer support to purchase books and educations material through Friends of the Library in your area. You can choose to support a local Friends of the Library instead of choosing one of our other thank you gifts.

  • When you donate to Capital Public Radio, you can ask for the "Library Option" and 5% of your donation will be sent to the Friends of the Library in your listening area.
  • Donations will be distributed based on the number of contributions from each geographic area to the list of Friends of Library organizations by zip code. Your zip code will help us determine your local group.
  • Choosing the “Library Option” as your thank you gift will help provide critical support for our libraries and our children... something on all of our minds with Capital Public Radio's new documentary on high school dropouts, Class Dismissed.

Ask for the Library Option when you contribute any amount
