Definitive Thelonious Monk on Prestige & Riverside (2 CD Set)

 thelonious

Definitive Thelonious Monk on Prestige & Riverside
2 CD Set

This 2 CD set covers a broad span of the '50s, beginning with trio sessions in New York featuring bassist Gary Mapp and drummer Art Blakey in October 1952 and stretching to sextet dates in San Francisco with trumpeter Joe Gordon, tenor saxophonists Harold Land and Charlie Rouse, bassist John Ore and drummer Billy Higgins in April 1960.

"This is some of the most amazing Thelonious Monk on record," says Nick Phillips, Concord Music Group's Vice President of Jazz.  "Whether he's playing a standard or one of his own compositions, he sounds uniquely like Thelonious Monk and nobody else. All of the tunes in this collection that Monk wrote have become jazz standards. Conversely, he plays standard tunes like Caravan and Tea for Two with such distinctive genius that you'd swear he had written them himself."

But Monk was no overnight sensation…"The one constant -- creatively, promotionally, and economically -- was his recordings. . . Most importantly, what Monk composed and recorded during the '50s amount to the definitive versions of some of the most enduring, joyous melodies in modern jazz."

This 21 song collection includes Blue Monk, Bemsha Swing, Pannonica, Brilliant Corners, Off Minor, Evidence, 'Round Midnight, and Ruby My Dear.

Paul McCartney: Kisses on the Bottom

 mccartney

Paul McCartney
Kisses On The Bottom

This album was recorded at the legendary Capitol Studios in Los Angeles. Veteran producer Tommy LiPuma paired McCartney with jazz icons Diana Krall, John Pizzarelli, Mike Mainieri, and John Clayton.

There are guest appearances by Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder and beautiful arrangements by Krall and Johnny Mandel!

For the L.A. sessions, LiPuma had McCartney use Nat King Cole's microphone in the studio where Nat, Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin recorded their major hits.

"Kisses On The Bottom" is a collection of standards that Paul grew up listening to. The songs chosen reveal that Paul and Tommy were reverent and adventurous in their selection.

Music and lyrics by Harold Arlen, Billy Hill, Johnny Mercer, Irving Berlin, Frank Loesser, plus a few McCartney originals that are true to the tradition.
