2nd Opinions Community Health Forum a Success

Where do you stand on the issue of medical marijuana? It's a major topic right now in California. With dispensaries popping up all over, Capital Public Radio and the Sacramento Bee brought together a studio audience and a panel of experts on May 20th as part of our latest 2nd Opinions Community Health Forum: "Medical Marijuana: Panacea or Problem?"

It was a lively discussion examining the medical, community and legal aspects of a wide array of viewpoints. The program was broadcast on Capital Public Radio and is available online at secondopinions.org. The group of panelists included medical experts, a marijuana dispensary owner and law enforcement officials. We also heard first hand from a medical marijuana user about how pot helps him to feel better.

"This a real hot button topic," says Capital Public Radio News and Information Director Joe Barr. "There's a general lack of information about medical marijuana right now - and a lot of misinformation out there -- so we felt it was important to have an in-depth discussion, allow people to ask questions of the panel, and then draw their own conclusions."

Two hallmarks of the 2nd Opinions forums have been multimedia and interactivity. This forum was no different. Sacramento Bee videographer Andy Alfaro visited the home of a medical marijuana user who lives in the Sacramento area. The 2nd Opinions audience got to go inside the patient's home to see and hear what his life was like. The video is available to view on the 2nd Opinions website. In addition, listeners at home were able to go online during the program to have their questions answered in a special 2nd Opinions chatroom.

Submit Your Idea for Our Next Forum
The next 2nd Opinions forum is scheduled for Wednesday, September 29. We want to hear your ideas for topics! Just go to secondopinions.org and let us know what you think.

The 2nd Opinions Community Health forums are part of Capital Public Radio's ongoing commitment to coverage of health issues and creating civil discourse in our community. Major funding for 2nd Opinions comes from the AT&T Foundation.
