KXJZ & KXPR have Traded Signals

CPR is on the move! September 5, 2006 KXJZ will move to 90.9 FM and KXPR will move to 88.9 FM.

Dear Listener,

As a loyal listener and supporter of the Capital Public Radio stations, we want to let you know about some exciting changes that will be happening soon with the KXJZ and KXPR signals.

If you’re an NPR news fan, you know that hearing news programs is a challenge in some parts of our listening area – we simply don’t reach all the listeners we’d like to serve.  In particular, Morning Edition, All Things Considered and our fine local reporting are not always easy to hear on KXJZ.

If you’re a classical music fan in and around the growing Stockton area you probably cannot hear our classical music programming broadcast from KXPR.  You may, however, have duplicate access to our news programming on both KXJZ and KUOP.

We have endeavored over the years to balance our commitments to news on KXJZ and classical music on KXPR.  We have made NPR’s key news, talk and call-in programs reliably available, and have also offered fine classical music on KXPR.  After hearing over time from many listeners we realize we have the ability do an even better job….

Effective September 5th, the Capital Public Radio stations will “swap frequencies.”  This means that NPR News, talk and jazz will be available on 90.9 FM, while classical music will move to 88.9 FM.

For most listeners in the Sacramento region, this will simply be a change of address.  Your favorite programs will still be on the air during the same times you always hear them.  Some listeners will be able to receive KXJZ for the first time, with its dynamic mix of NPR news, intelligent talk, and jazz.  In the Stockton area, listeners will still receive our news programming on KUOP and will gain classical programming from KXPR.

We have made this decision after very careful consideration.  This is a tremendous opportunity to better serve our community by meeting our listeners’ needs for a reliable source for NPR news in Sacramento and by bringing our quality classical music programming to the Stockton area.

While this is an exciting time at the Capital Public Radio stations, we realize that even small changes are easily noticed and that some listeners may not like the changes.  We want you to know that we would be happy to talk to you personally about any questions or concerns you may have.  The Stations’ primary contact is Carl Watanabe, Station Manager.  His direct line is (916) 278-8905 and his e-mail address is watanabe@csus.edu.

Thank you so much for your support of the Capital Public Radio stations in the past.  We hope you will continue to listen and enjoy what you hear.

Sincerely yours,
Tom Livingston
