Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Frequency Swap? KXJZ is moving to 90.9 on your radio dial and KXPR is moving to 88.9.
Why is CPR doing this? We have two major radio frequencies: 90.9 and 88.9. The coverage area of 90.9 potentially reaches a larger listening audience than 88.9. Currently 88.9 (KXJZ) carries News and Information programs which appeal to a broader audience. Capital Public Radio (CPR) wants to provide the most desired programs to the greatest number of listeners in order to grow and strengthen our support of the communities we serve. This change is part of our mission and CPR’s strategic plan for continued growth of our combined services – news/jazz and classical together.
What is your commitment to Classical Music? We strongly believe in classical music and its future on our stations. The quality and nature of our classical music programs will not change.
What is your commitment to News and Information? We are committed to bringing NPR News and Information to areas in our region that have previously been underserved (i.e. downtown Sacramento and the Roseville-Auburn corridor). This change allows Capital Public Radio to capitalize on the strength and historic growth of our NPR news and information service.
Who will be affected by the Swap? The overwhelming majority of listeners will hear no change other than the “change of address” for their favorite programs. Some current KXPR listeners in some areas (e.g. Lincoln, Auburn, Meadow Vista, and the Bay Area) will have difficulty or may no longer be able to hear KXPR, but will hear KXJZ instead.
Is there a way to improve the signal? We’re exploring ways to extend the 88.9 coverage area, but there are no immediate possibilities available.
Are there other ways I can hear my favorite station? All of our programs are available through online streaming at www.capradio.org. We are upgrading the capacity of our online service so that you will soon be able to hear classical music at near CD quality. In addition, for listeners who receive a weak 88.9 signal, the best solution may be an inexpensive di-pole antenna, available at audio stores such as Radio Shack, Best Buy, or Fry’s, or which may even have come with your stereo when you bought it.
