News with a 'Z' The Off Air Blog
As far as in-studios go,
this little show has carved out quite a niche and drawn more
talented musicians than I even knew existed. The Good News: There
are no signs of slowin' down. I have four bands on deck between now
and mid January.
The GREAT News: There are two bands splitting the bill on this week's show.
Electropoetic Coffee
A unique duo starts the show but this isn't the first
time you've heard them on a Capital Public Radio
program. They first appeared on
Insight with
Jeffrey Callison. They've have had numerous
shows around town; maybe you had the pleasure
of seeing them at The Crocker Art Museum this
Fall.
While
poetry and jazz may not ring the first bell
when you think of this show - I think you'll be
surprised by how well NSAA's lyrics and Ross
Hammond's guitar work fit in around here.
Check out Ross and NSAA perform live some time -
you'll be glad you did.
Perfect venue, right?

The Common Men
I first read of this band in a bathroom...that sounds all wrong.
Amidst Bukowski quotes drawings and other tags,
scrawled on the Luna's cafe men's room wall is the phrase
"THE COMMON MEN."

Not what you'd call declarative but it brings
to mind phrases like Devo's
"Q). Are We Not Men?" and instantly had my attention.

By the time the band (Kevin Ian, Josh Sims,
Kimberli Aparicio) hit the
studio I had more News, Classical and Jazz staff ask me
about just WHO I was hosting...in a good way!
