Western Americana / Sounds of the cosmos

Western Americana   A priceless collection of Western Americana including Native American pottery, baskets, western artwork and manuscripts has been donated to the General Library at the University of California, Davis.  "You never find this material, some of it very, very rare, in one place. And it's not just about Western history," said UC Davis history professor Louis Warren, an expert on the West.

Today on Insight you'll hear from Daryl Morrison, who heads Special Collections for the UC Davis General Library; Professor Alan Taylor, Professor of American History UC Davis and an expert in the early American frontier; and Vince Lozito, a personal friend of Michael Harrison, the man who spent 80 years amassing the collection.

Sounds of the cosmos  A local researcher and Guggenheim scholar is exploring audio from the cosmos.  "The radio is a sign of modern technology, and has been studied as a 'communication device,' but here we encounter an entirely different notion of radio, as sounds coming from the heavens, a veritable soundtrack of astronomy," says today’s guest, Douglas Kahn.

Today on Insight Douglas Kahn, Director of the UC Davis Technocultural Studies Program, plays recordings of the strange sounds of "atmospheric radio" and tells you why he’s studying them.

An audio sample of atomospheric radio can be played from this page by clicking the link below.
