Transcript
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "FAREWELL MY SUMMER LOVE")
MICHAEL JACKSON: (Singing) Farewell my summer love. Farewell. Girl, I won't forget you. Farewell my summer love. Farewell.
SCOTT SIMON, HOST:
This summer, we asked you to give us your stories of summer romance. Hundreds of you answered our call. Thank you very much. That warms our heart. Before summer fades, we have two more stories to share - Carole Williams of Fairmont, W. Va. and Maleeha Mubashiruddin of Chicago. The song "Moments to Remember" by The Four Lads reminds Carole of her summer fling.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "MOMENTS TO REMEMBER")
THE FOUR LADS: (Singing) The New Year's Eve we did the town. The day we tore the goal post down.
CAROLE WILLIAMS: It was 1965. I was just out of college, and he was just back from flying fighters in Korea. I was working in a small public library on the Jersey Shore. He was waiting to start grad school to study music in the fall. Afternoons in that library were not very busy, and he came in almost every afternoon.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "MOMENTS TO REMEMBER")
THE FOUR LADS: (Singing) The quiet walks, the noisy fun.
WILLIAMS: One rainy afternoon, he offered to drive me home. We kissed in the car. His brother-in-law saw us. He was black. I was white, and I never saw him again, but I have moments to remember.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "MOMENTS TO REMEMBER")
THE FOUR LADS: (Singing) We will have these moments to remember.
MALEEHA MUBASHIRUDDIN: My summer love started in July of 2006. It came to be because my aunt put an ad in an Indian newspaper seeking a husband for me. I come from a Pakistani background where it's traditional for relatives to help find partners for family members. Through that ad, I was put in touch with a Chicago man named Kasha (ph) whose father had seen the ad. When we met in person at Reagan Airport, I knew this was for real. When he walked out of security, our eyes locked and I knew I was going to marry this man. We were engaged by September of 2006 and were married April of 2007. I moved to Chicago and have very fond memories of riding down Lakeshore Drive listening to none other than "Summer Love" by Justin Timberlake.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "SUMMER LOVE")
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE: (Singing) Ridin' in the drop top with the top down, saw you switchin' lanes, girl.
MUBASHIRUDDIN: We're still married and even eight years later, have a fondness for that song.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "SUMMER LOVE")
TIMBERLAKE: (Singing) Tell me where you're from, what you do, what you like. Let me pick your brain, girl. And tell me how they got that pretty little face on that pretty little frame, girl.
SIMON: That was Maleeha Mubashiruddin and before that, Carole Williams, sharing their stories of summer love. This is WEEKEND EDITION from NPR News. I'm Scott Simon.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "SUMMER LOVE")
TIMBERLAKE: (Singing) But let me buy you drinks - better yet, rings. Do it how you want it done, girl. And who would've thought that you could the one 'cause I - I can't wait to fall in love with you. You can't wait to fall in love with me. This just can't be summer love. You'll see. This just can't be summer love. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
