For this edition of the Here & Now DJ Sessions, we sit down with DeBraun Thomas, host of the Crunkadelic Funk Show on WUKY public radio in Lexington, Kentucky.
“I play anything that is deemed funky and soulful. Anything that brings out emotion,” he told host Jeremy Hobson. That includes older music, from artists like Betty Davis and Eddie Hazel, to newer sounds. He says that the funk and soul of the ’60s and ’70s has inspired a lot of music coming out in recent years.
He cites new music from Mark Ronson, and a new album from Snoop Dogg that features both Stevie Wonder and Charlie Wilson.
“It just makes me smile that there is a resurgence of this music in the mainstream,” he said. “It’s not kind of washed away with a lot of the things you see in modern pop nowadays.”
Note: We have a Spotify playlist for our weekly DJ Sessions segment. The playlist is updated each week with new songs. Spotify is free to use, but requires a login.
