Proposition 40 Proposition 40 may be one of the least
contentious measures on the November 6 ballot--its sponsors have
withdrawn their support for the proposition. A "yes" vote would
uphold the state's current redistricting plan, while a "no" vote
means that districts wil be adjusted by officials supervised for
the California Supreme Court. However, voters confused by Prop. 40
are likely to vote "no" when they actually support the measure--as
voters often do when a list of ballot initiaves is overwhelmingly
long, or the issues seem unfamiliar.

Poll finds for the first time more Californians are supporting
than opposing a ballot initiative to replace the death penalty with

Augusta Read Thomas Augusta Read Thomas has been called "a true
virtuoso composer" by the New Yorker and her song "Astral
Canticle," which she created as Mead Composer-in-Residence with the
Chicago Symphony Orchestra, earned her a Pulitzer Prize in Music
nomination. Augusta delivered the keynote
address for the Festival of New American Music at Sacramento
State University Thursday. She is also the featured composer
of the festival, which runs through Saturday, November 10.
