Cuban Missile Crisis 50 years ago the world was on the verge of nuclear
annihilation. The Soviet Union's attempt to stage nuclear
missiles in Cuba led to a 13-day standoff between the United States
and its Communist counterpart, which ended 50 years ago this
weekend. We'll take a look back at what it was like to live
in America during those 13 days and how the nation's president,
John F. Kennedy, ultimately averted humanity's greatest
disaster. We'll also look at new public documents from
then Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy showing just how
close to nuclear war we really were.
Proposition 35 Proposition 35 would quadruple jail time and
greatly increase financial penalties for people convicted of human
trafficking. Proponents of Prop 35 say sex trafficking is out
of control in California and needs to be curbed. Opponents
fear the ballot language is vague and overbroad. They believe
new definitions of "trafficking" will unfairly target prostitutes
and divert what little resources law enforcement have from chasing
true human traffickers.
California Glaciers Glaciers have formed and
sculpted the Sierra Nevada Mountains numerous times over millions
of years, leaving us with the landscape we know today. But in
the past two centuries, the mountains have experienced a dramatic
loss of glaciers. Geologist Richard Hilton joins us to explain glacial
systems in the Sierra Nevada, how they were formed, how they
sculpted the state's great granitic spine and how they are
currently being affected by climate change. We'll also speak with
Tim Palmer, writer
and photographer, who has recently published the book "California
Glaciers." Both Hilton and Palmer will be speaking at
Sierra College's two-day lecture "Glaciers: Going, going, gone?" in Rocklin
this weekend. Hilton's lecture "How the Sierra Obtained its Beauty?" is
Friday, October 26 and Palmer's lecture "California Glaciers" is
Saturday, October 27.
Haunted Stacks In honor of Halloween, the
Sacramento Public Library is hosting a Haunted Stacks Tour, which will include "ghost"
characters, story telling and a screening of a classic scary movie.
We'll talk with two library staff who are participating in the tour
and hear some of the stories.
