Proposition 34 The question of whether a
society should punish criminals who commit extreme acts of murder
and violence with death is largely based on a person's moral,
ethical, and/or emotional stance on the issue. But Proposition 34 adds one more factor to
California's death penalty debate: the financial cost of killing
criminals. Proponents of Prop 34 say abolishing the death
penalty will save the Golden State $100 million a
year, which can be redirected to investigating crimes.
Opponents say the cost savings are misleading and
California's death penalty should be reformed to be more efficient,
not scrapped entirely.
One Amazing Thing Sacramento State's One Book
program is featuring "One Amazing Thing" author Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni Thursday, Oct. 25.
She's the winner of an American Book Award, a Light of India Award,
an Allen Ginsberg poetry prize and other honors. "One Amazing
Thing" has been called "ingeniously conceived and intelligently
written … the book is a fun read from the first page to the last,"
by "Life of Pi" author Ha Jin.
The Year of Magical Thinking The life of
Sacramento-born Pulitzer Prize nominated novelist Joan Didion
is the subject of a one-woman play, "The Year of
Magical Thinking," at the California Stage. The play comes from
Didion's award-winning book of the same name.
