At the Polls Stockton & Sacramento
The California State primary is usually one of the more uneventful
elections. But, there are a few interesting races to keep an
eye on, including a big-spending five-way race in Stanislaus
County. And this is the first time California voters will use
the new "top-two" open primary ballots, which are a big change from
past elections. We'll check in with two Capital Public Radio
reporters at different polling places in Stockton and Sacramento to
see what voters are saying about the new "top-two" open primary. We'll also talk
with the Sacramento and San Joaquin
County Registrar of Voters to find out if voter turnout is holding
strong.
How I Learned to Drive The Pulitzer
Prize-winning play, "How I Learned to Drive," explores the ideas of
control and manipulation behind incest, misogyny, and pedophilia by
putting you inside the minds of a pedophile and the young girl whom
he forms a relationship with. The play, although not for
everyone, is superbly acted by Stephanie Gularte, Jamie Jones,
Melanie Marshall, and James Hiser (who is not able to join the
interview) and has been getting good reviews in the past three
weeks of its five week run at Capital Stage in Sacramento. We'll
discuss the adult themes of the script and the actors will perform
a scene from the play.
Sea of Bees Next weekend (June 7-10) Sea Of
Bees celebrates the release of its album Orangefarben with
four area concerts with bands Little Wings, Sister
Crayon and Andy Cabic from Vetiver. Sea of Bees second album
"Orangefarben" was recorded in Sacramento and is gaining national
traction. Most of the songs on the album were written and
performed by Julie Anne Bees (AKA Julie Ann Baenziger), who
recently played in New York City and South by Southwest in
Austin.
Sea of Bees Four-Show Locations and
Information:
Thursday: Bows and Arrows with Little Wings
This is the first of the four shows and it's an acoustic set with
Jules and Amber and our friend Kyle Field of Little Wings will be
joining us San Francisco. We are really excited to have him with
us, he hasn't played Sacto in ages! Little Wings currently has nine
albums out, most of them on K Records, and has shared stages with
the likes of Feist, Devendra Banhart, Mt. Eerie and so many
more.

Friday and Saturday: Luigis with Sister
Crayon We've been trying to do some shows with Sister
Crayon for a few years now and it's finally happening! If you live
in Sacto, you'd be living under a rock if you haven't heard of
Sister Crayon by now, but maybe you just moved here, so you need to
know how great they are! Both Sea of Bees and Sister Crayon have
been out of town touring (Sea of Bees in Europe and Sister Crayon
all over the USA with Built to Spill and Maps and Atlases) so we're
stoked to both be back in town together to do these shows. On
Friday night Exquisite Corpse is opening and on Saturday Doombird
is opening, two more great reasons to catch these shows.

Sunday Matinee show with Andy Cabic from
Vetiver For the last of the four shows, we're playing an
afternoon matinee at the Fifth String, a cool old brick building
filled with beautiful guitars. We're incredibly excited to have
Andy Cabic, the principle singer and songwriter in Vetiver (one of
our all time favorite bands) sharing the stage with us. You might
recognize his voice from the harmony on "Won't Be Long" off of
Songs for the Ravens. He's got five really great albums out, the
last few on Sub Pop. We don't really have a favorite, they're all
so good! This is a rare acoustic set by Andy, so don't miss
it!
